The Victorian High Country is a great place to visit, and easy to get to. Major town surrounding the Alpine region are Warburton, Dargo, Omeo, Harrietville, Bright and Mansfield.
Best time to travel is in the summer months, when the weather is mild and the wildflowers are out. In winter much of the area lies under snow, and there are many seasonal road closures. Much of the area is within the Alpine National Parks and therefore there are restrictions on access to some tracks, you have to leave your pets at home etc. There are major touring routes through the mountains, some suitable for conventional vehicles, others only suitable for four wheel drives. When travelling into remote Alpine regions always ensure you are fully prepared, your vehicle is well equipped, you have warm weatherproof clothing (it can snow any time of the year), plenty of food, survival gear, and that you have radio communication (UHF) and have told someone your intended route of travel and expected arrival time. |

To visit the scenery seen in The Campfire Chronicles episode 7 The Wonnangatta Murders, you need to travel to the town of Mansfield, two and a half hours north east of Melbourne. The town of Jamieson is 32 kilometers south of Mansfield, and the historic Kevington Pub on the banks of the Goulburn is 15 minutes further on.
The Wonnangatta Valley is accessible in a high clearance four wheel drive from both Gippsland and North East Victoria, the following trek is from Mansfield. I suggest you take a minimum of three days.
Mansfield to Merrijig 18.00km 15 min
Merrijig to Sheepyard Flat 17.44km 25 min
Sheepyard to Eight Mile Gap 17.77km 30 min
Eight Mile to Refrigerator Gap 04.34km 8 min
Refrigerator Gap to Bluff Hut 06.80km 20 min
Bluff Hut to Picture Point 07.17km 30 min
Picture Point to King Billy Jcn 04.00km 15 min
King Billy to Zeka Spur Jcn 15.00km 60 min
Zeka – Wonnangatta homestead 26.78km 72 min
